By Rachel Courtland (Image: NASA/Thierry Legault) The space shuttle Atlantis masquerades as a sunspot in this image, taken by photographer Thierry Legault as the shuttle sped towards the Hubble Space Telescope on Tuesday. Atlantis is on an 11-day mission to give Hubble a new lease on life. In a series of five back-to-back spacewalks, astronauts are replacing old equipment, installing two new cameras, and repairing two others. After a two-day journey to reach Hubble, the shuttle’s robotic arm reached out to grab hold of the probe on Wednesday. Astronauts emerged the next day to outfit the telescope with a new camera and replace an old computer. Astronauts are now conducting the second spacewalk of the mission to install new batteries as well as new gyroscopes needed to stabilise the scope. Thierry made this image using a digital camera and a 5-inch refracting telescope with a solar filter (see a large version of the image showing the sun’s entire disc). More on these topics:
